PGA Coach's Guide to the Pre-Shot Routine & Think Box / Play Box
How elite tour professionals separate analytical calculation from athletic execution. Eliminate doubt, quiet swing thoughts, and achieve 100% commitment before every strike.

A golf swing takes 1.2 seconds—far too rapid for conscious steering. The outcome is determined in the 20 seconds before you swing: inside your Think Box calculation and your Play Box trust.
The Two Brains of Golf: Analytical vs. Athletic Flow
Amateurs struggle not because they lack hand-eye coordination, but because they carry the analytical brain (left hemisphere) directly over the golf ball. When you stand over a shot contemplating hip rotation, wrist angles, or water hazards, your motor cortex freezes, creating jerky muscles and disastrous deceleration.
"Doubt is poison to athletic movement. A mediocre decision executed with 100% unconditional commitment will beat a flawless decision executed with 50% commitment every single time."
Pioneered by legendary coaches Lynn Marriott and Pia Nilsson (VISION54), dividing your pre-shot preparation into an objective Think Box and an athletic Play Box separates strategy from sensory execution.
The Think Box (3-6 Paces Back)
Laser the yardage, feel the wind, observe turf grain, choose club, and pick an ultra-fine target.
The Decision Line (Commitment Threshold)
Take one physical feel rehearsal, take a cleansing exhale, and cross the line. All debate is officially closed.
The Play Box (Athletic Reaction)
Aim face, settle stance, look at target, look at ball, pull the trigger within 6 to 8 seconds. Zero mechanics allowed.

Walk through the mental choreography that keeps Tour players calm, decisive, and immune to pressure.
"Gather all data calmly. Make a decisive club and target selection. Once chosen, debate is over."
1. The Think Box (Analysis & Strategy)
Walking up to the ball without an exact number or target, deciding club while standing over the ball.
Place a club on the turf 4 feet behind the ball as your physical "Decision Line". Hit 15 balls, executing the full 20-second routine on every shot.
How Hall of Famers Mastered the Routine
Jack Nicklaus: The Mental Movie
Nicklaus never hit a golf shot without first watching a Hollywood-style color movie in his head: seeing the ball land softly on green turf, then seeing the swing that produced that exact flight.
Tiger Woods: The 10-Second Post-Shot Rule
Tiger allowed himself 10 seconds of honest emotion after a poor shot. When he replaced his club in the bag and took his 11th step down the fairway, the shot ceased to exist completely.
Brooks Koepka: The 7-Second Trigger
Major champion Brooks Koepka refuses to freeze over the golf ball. From the moment his feet touch the stance line in the Play Box, his swing begins within 6 to 7 seconds.
3 Drills to Inoculate Your Routine Under Pressure
The Alignment Stick Decision Line
Place an alignment stick horizontally across your mat 3 feet behind your ball. Stand behind the stick to do all your thinking and club checks. Once your feet step over the stick, no second thoughts are permitted.
The 8-Second Play Box Stopwatch
Have a practice partner time you with their smartphone stopwatch. Start the timer the instant your rear foot steps in to take your stance. Pull the trigger within 6 to 8 seconds maximum.
The 100% Commitment Scorecard
During your next 9 holes, ignore score completely. Rate each shot 1 or 0 based solely on whether you achieved 100% commitment before swinging. A great score is 32 out of 36 committed shots.
