In a greenside bunker, the clubface never touches the golf ball. The club strikes the sand, and the hydraulic force of the expanding sand cushion pops the ball into the air. Trust the sand.

Part 1 • Kinematic Mechanics

The Sand Splash Cushion & Bounce Activation

When hitting from sand, your club's bounce sole acts as a rudder. By laying the clubface open 30° to 45° prior to gripping, you expose 12° to 16° of effective bounce. As the club enters the sand 2 inches behind the ball, the bounce prevents it from digging into the sub-base, gliding underneath the ball.

format_quote

"Amateurs fear the bunker because they fear blading it over the green. Blading happens because they quit in the sand. If you accelerate with an open face, you can swing with 80% power and the ball will only go 15 yards."

PGA Tour Sand Play Specialists

Lower your stance by flexing your knees and digging your shoes 1 inch into the sand. This builds traction on shifting sand and automatically lowers the swing arc low point directly into the sand layer.

Bunker Setup Checkpoints

Standard Fluffy Sand Execution

check_circleWiggle Feet Deep: Dig your shoe soles 1 inch into sand to test texture and lower your swing plane.
check_circleBall Position Forward: Position ball off your lead instep to encourage shallow entry.
check_circleFull Acceleration: Accelerate to a high, proud finish. Quitting on the swing leaves ball in the bunker.
errorThe Fatal Error:

Decelerating into the sand out of fear. The sand cushions the ball; you must accelerate through.

The Line in the Sand Drill: Draw a line in the bunker. Practice swinging so your club enters the sand exactly on the line 10 times in a row.

Part 3 • Execution Breakdown

The 3 Non-Negotiable Pillars of Sand Play

Execute these three setup steps to turn greenside traps into easy scoring chances.

Step 1: The Wiggle & OpenOpen face and wide stance in bunker

Wiggle Feet & Open Face

Setup

Dig your shoes 1 inch into sand. Lay the wedge face open 30°, then grip. Ball is positioned forward off your lead heel.

Stance:Wide & Dug In
Face Angle:Open 30°
Weight:60% Lead Foot
Master Tip: Keep weight anchored forward; never shift back to rear foot.

Step 2: Dollar Bill EntryEntering sand two inches behind ball

The Dollar Bill Strike

Impact

Focus your eyes 2 inches behind the ball. Slap the wide bounce sole into the sand, lifting a dollar-bill-sized patch of sand onto the green.

Focus Point:2" behind ball
Divot Depth:1" shallow pan
Ball Contact:Sand cushion only
Master Tip: Don't look at the ball; stare intensely at the sand spot 2 inches behind it.
Step 3: High Follow ThroughHigh full follow through out of bunker

Accelerate to High Finish

Finish

Drive your chest through the shot and finish with hands high over your left shoulder. Chest faces the target with full balance.

Hands:High above shoulder
Acceleration:Continuous through sand
Sand Spray:Sprays onto green
Master Tip: If the sand lands on the green, the ball always lands on the green.
